Deployment Across Mixed – Use Properties
Expanding EV Charging Access For Communities
Wesgroup is one of Western Canada’s largest private real estate organizations with an extensive portfolio of commercial and mixed-use properties.
Wesgroup was approved through the Natural Resources Canada’ Zero Emission Vehicle Infrastructure Program 2020 grant to complete the installation of 54 Level 2 chargers. 12 sites were selected as part of the roll out including retail and commercial building with tenant and public parking. LAE provided a turnkey project rollout for all 54 chargers deployed in 2022.
Project Objective
An amenity for communities and promoting sustainable development
The objective of the project was to provide tenants and visitors with access to EV charging services when visiting or staying on Wesgroup properties. This is in alignment with Wesgroups ESG initiatives as a community-driven developer.
Challenges
Understanding the different challenges and costs between an indoor and outdoor parking lot with different site designs and layouts was a major takeaway from our client.
Process
Wesgroup sought to deploy 54 chargers across 12 sites and required EV specialist project management services to plan infrastructure, site design, specific equipment, procurement, installation and commission.
Results
On arrival of charger shipment, all 54 chargers were installed and commissioned within two months. The project was completed well ahead of the NRCAN funding requirement deadline. Detail project budgeting allowed for highly efficient use of grant funding reaching 49% or the 50% maximum.
Project Insights
EV charger deployment requires carefully considered upfront planning and design of electrical and communications infrastructure to ensure smooth implementation and minimal disruption to site. Specialist EV charging and electrical and operational expertise at the outset is key to successful deployment.
